Country music legend Toby Keith died Monday night at the age of 62 after an 18-month battle with stomach cancer, leaving behind a legacy of hit songs and style that was uniquely his own.
The legendary artist was one of the most well-known singers of the genre throughout his decade spanning career. He released a slew of iconic tracks, including 32 country chart No. 1’s like “Beer For My Horses” and “How Do You Like Me Now?!”
He is widely known for his narrative story-telling in his songs that painted vivid pictures of the America that Keith experienced.
“Should’ve Been A Cowboy” was Keith’s breakout track way back in 1993 and he followed that explosion onto the scene with over a decade of chart topping tunes that will live on in country music history.
Keith continued to record and perform well into his battle with cancer, with his last performance coming with three sold-out shows in Las Vegas in December 2023.
His crowning achievement in my eyes came with the release of his song; “Courtesy of The Red, White And Blue” in May 2002. This song for many became the anthem of patriotism in the wake of the 9/11 attacks that shook the nation to its core.
Keith unapologetically declared his love for his country in perhaps its darkest hour and elevated himself into an icon of the genre who used his art to rally his country in the face of uncertainty and fear of what the future may hold.
Keith was never one to be put in a box and never allowed perceptions or expectations of him to influence how he lived his life or forged his career.
Keith was a man who prided himself on his independence and his love for music and his country that is almost unrivaled by all of his contemporaries.
He will be deeply missed and the hole that he leaves in country music will be tough to fill again, but the legacy he forged will light the fire in young artists to one day take his place.
They say that everyone dies twice, first when they stop breathing and finally when a person says their name for the last time. As long as country music fans still live on this planet, Toby Keith will live forever.
