Red Wolves dominate Goombay Division in Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship

Arkansas State women’s basketball gained an impressive set of road wins and their first regular season tournament win since 2008.

The Red Wolves traveled down to Nassau, the Bahamas to participate in the Baha Mar Hoops Nassau Championship. A-State was put in the Goombay Division with the Houston Cougars, Kent State Golden Flashes and the Tulsa Golden Hurricanes.

A-State opened the tournament with a dominating victory over Houston. The Red Wolves scored a whopping 31 points in the first quarter compared to the Cougars’ 16, and they never gave up that lead as they would obliterate Houston 83-66.

The Red Wolves forced a program-record 38 turnovers in the game. Guard Zyion Shannon led the team in points with 15. Forward Wynter Rogers and guard Bella Weary each had 4 steals, and Weary led the team in rebounds with 6. Rogers and guard Mimi McCollister led the team in assists with 4 each.

Kent State was the next victim for the Red Wolves, and they received just as bad of a beating as the Cougars got. Four Red Wolves players scored in double digits, and the Red Wolves secured their victory in the Goombay Division with a 74-54 victory over the Golden Flashes.

Guard D’Arrah Allen led in scoring by getting 17 points off the bench. Shannon, guard Mia Tarver and forward Marlie Dickerson all scored in double digits as well. Rogers grabbed a team-leading 10 rebounds and guard Crislyn Rose led in assists with 6.

The Red Wolves now hold a record of 5-3 with the victories. They return home to take on Florida Gulf Coast tonight at 7:00 pm at First National Bank Arena.
