Alumni support A-State Rugby at Bubbles and Bingo

Alumni and supporters alike gathered to raise funds for the nationally ranked Arkansas State University Rugby Club at the eighth annual Bubbles and Bingo event.

The event, held Feb. 7 at the Cooper Alumni Center, consisted of a silent auction, brunch and bingo.

Brandon Baxter, host of the A-State Morning Show and sporting events, returned as emcee.

“When I did this last year, I was a fill-in, and I told Amanda at the end of it, I want to come back,”  Baxter said. “We’re here today to raise money to support A-State rugby, and it’s all made possible by our friends at the Alumni Association.”

Amanda McDaniel, director of events for the alumni association, said the fundraiser was significant for the team.

“This event raises lots of funds that they need desperately,” McDaniel said. “Every dollar you spend today will go directly to them to help them pursue a higher ranking and the championship.”

Coach Dominic Shaw said the contributions are used to support the team’s essential needs, including equipment, travel, and membership fees, allowing the players to compete at a higher level.

The Rugby Club, founded by Curt Huckaby, has consistently ranked amongst the top collegiate rugby clubs in the country. Under the leadership of Shaw, the team has attracted talented players from across the world.

Shaw said the program is experiencing strong growth.

“Our rugby program is growing exponentially, as well as the quality of boys we’re getting,” Shaw said.

As a club sport, the rugby team does not receive direct funding from A-state athletics, making fundraisers like this one essential.

As the afternoon progressed, the event room was filled with intense bingo rivalry and occasional spurts of music by the Vikki Mcgee band.

Many of the attendees were returning guests. Alumni Audrey Poff said she has been attending the event since its very first iteration.

“It’s an awesome event for a great cause, and it’s just so much fun every year. You can tell when you walk in, and all the ladies are hooting and hollering,” Poff said.

Poff said it is always a pleasure to attend the event and watch it grow every year, much like Shaw, who shared the same sentiment.

“It started off with about 75 people. Since I’ve been involved, it’s just grown exponentially. It’s obviously very special and close to our hearts,” Shaw said.
