The Arkansas State volleyball team fell to the Rice Owls 3-1 in the Red Wolves’ second game of the A-State Invitational.
A-State’s record dropped to 5-3 on the season while the Owl’s record improved to 9-0. Rice, a strong opponent, is ranked No. 30 in the nation and take on Stephen F. Austin on Saturday to round out their stay in Jonesboro.
Timber Terrell led the Red Wolves with 15 kills on the night. Peyton Uhlenhake had an uncharacteristic low scoring game against the Owls. The junior only registered five kills but also shared playing time with Paulina Sobolewska. Sobolewska accounted for eight kills in the game.
Santiago Restrepo and the Red Wolves finish the A-State Invitational Saturday against Arkansas-Pine Bluff. The match is set to begin at 1:30 p.m.
Fourth Set
Despite taking an early lead in the fourth set, the Red Wolves eventually fell to a high-energy Owl team. Rice fell behind 10-7 early on but clawed their way back into the match. Terrell tried to stop the surge with a big kill but the Owls stayed neck and neck with the home team. Rice jumped out to a 21-16 lead forcing the Red Wolves into a timeout. Restrepo’s team never recovered and fell in the set 25-18.
Third Set
The Red Wolves flexed their attacking muscles in the third set. A dominant 25-20 win brought the game to a 2-1 scoreline. The Red Wolves boasted a seven point lead at one point in the set at 21-14. However, the Owls gained some momentum late in the third. Rice brought the game within five points at a 23-18 scoreline as A-State called a timeout to settle things down. Julianna Cramer sealed the set for A-State after she completed a tricky kill catching the Owls off guard.
Second Set
A-State dominated most of the second set but a late push from the Owls saw the Red Wolves fall behind 2-0 in the game. The home team held the lead for a majority of the set including a 5-point advantage at 18-13. From that point on Rice pushed back into the game. Restrepo attempted to stop the Owl’s surge with two timeouts late in the set but A-State made their own problems with a couple of attacking errors. Rice won the set 25-23.
First Set
The Red Wolves looked strong for a majority of the first set. There were multiple lead changes as both teams looked to find their footing in the match. A-State would increase their advantage by a couple of points before the Owls pulled the match right back. Late in the set, Rice went on a three point run which gave the visitors a 20-17 lead. Restrepo called a timeout to try and salvage some momentum. Unfortunately for A-State, insinuated by a great block by Rice’s Grace Morgan, the Red Wolves could not gain much ground and lost the first set 25-18.
