The Arkansas State volleyball team lost 3-1 to the Appalachian State Mountaineers in the First National Bank Arena on Friday night.
The Red Wolves’ record fell to 11-6 overall and 2-3 in the Sun Belt Conference with the loss to Appalachian State.
With the win, the Mountaineers improved their SBC record to 5-0 and overall record to 9-9.
Timber Terrell led the Red Wolves with 16 kills while no other A-State player reached double digits on the night as Macey Putt was closest with seven.
Game Summary
Fourth Set
Appalachian State dominated the fourth set and did not give the Red Wolves a chance to force a fifth set.
The Red Wolves carried momentum over from their third set victory and won the first point of the fourth with a major block by Kendahl Davenport.
Despite this fast start by the Red Wolves, App State took control and increased their lead consistently throughout the set without much resistance leading by large amounts at 12-5 and 16-8.
A-State did gain some momentum late in the set. The visitors led 22-12 but the large deficit did not kill the spirit of the Red Wolves. The home team won three consecutive points in a row to force an App State timeout. After the timeout, the Mountaineers regained control and won the set 25-15.
Third Set
The Red Wolves took control early on in the third set and never really looked back. Back-to-back kills set the tone early when Peyton Uhlenhake made the score 12-9 before Timber Terrell made it 13-9 in an emphatic passage of play.
The visitors picked up some slight momentum late in the set, but a smart tip by Terrell proved too much to handle and the Red Wolves went up 24-16 forcing set point. Two points later, A-State closed out the set 25-17.
Second Set
The Red Wolves lost a tightly contested second set as A-State put up a valiant effort but fell short after getting the set to match point.
The second set saw seven tied scores and three lead changes. The Mountaineers had a commanding lead at 15-10 but the home team never gave up.
Macey Putt connected on a huge block to bring the game within three points at 15-12 before Timber Terrell brought the match within one after a giant kill at 15-14.
The Red Wolves found themselves ahead 24-23 and in command, forcing the Mountaineers into a timeout before playing for set point.
Appalachian State’s timeout talk proved successful as the visitors took the next three points to win the set 26-24 with their backs against the wall.
First Set
Although the Red Wolves took a commanding lead in the first set, the Mountaineers battled back and won the first game 27-25.
The Red Wolves had a 19-14 lead at one one point but a late surge from Appalachian State saw the Mountaineers claw back into the match.
The visitors had set point at a 24-23 scoreline before Julianna Cramer pulled the set level with a smart tip.
Despite the smart play from Cramer and a little momentum swing, the Red Wolves never really found their way back into the set in its final stages.
Looking Ahead
The Red Wolves return to action tomorrow night against Coastal Carolina. First service from the First National Bank Arena is set for 6:30 p.m.
