The Arkansas State volleyball team dropped its second consecutive home Sun Belt Conference match as the Red Wolves lost 3-1 to the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers on Saturday night.
With the loss, the Red Wolves’ overall record dropped to 11-7 on the season and 2-4 in the SBC.
Timber Terrell led the Red Wolves in kills with 16, while Macey Putt also chipped in with double digits at 10. Julianna Cramer led the Red Wolves in assists with 19 and was just one dig away from a double-double as the sophomore accounted for nine digs.
The Red Wolves had trouble dealing with the Chanticleer’s star sophomore Anett Nemeth. The Hungary native powered the Chanticleers with 30 kills and 11 digs. Kyla Manning also accounted for a double-double with 13 kills and 13 digs while Brigitta Petrenko boasted 53 assists and 12 digs for a double-double of her own. With the win, the Chanticleers improved to 6-0 in the SBC and 16-2 overall.
Game Summary
Fourth Set
The Red Wolves battled hard in the fourth set and the teams played to 11 tied scores in the set. Coastal looked like they were going to close out the game comfortably after jumping out to a 6-2 lead, but out of a timeout the Red Wolves forced themselves back into the match.
Late in the set at an 18-16 scoreline in the favor of Coastal Carolina, the Chanticleer’s Kyla Manning made a giant block giving the visitors a 19-16 lead and momentum. Coastal Carolina went on to win the set 25-20.
Third Set
Coastal Carolina looked like the dominant team they have been all season as the Chanticleer’s dominated the third set. Coming off a second set loss, Coastal jumped out to an early lead and held it comfortably in the third.
Nemeth led the Chanticleers through three sets with 18 kills on 29 attempts boasting a great .586 hitting percentage. Nemeth was just three digs away from a double-double at this point as the sophomore registered seven digs through three sets.
Madison Brown earned a nice hitting percentage for the Red Wolves through three sets connecting on six kills for a .667 tally.
The Chanticleers won the set 25-15.
Second Set
The Red Wolves started the second set quickly and never looked back. Timber Terrell and Josie Stanford set the tone early with a combined block that put the Red Wolves ahead 4-2. A-State increased their lead to 7-3 forcing the Chanticleers into a timeout and then increased it once again to 11-4 causing Coastal’s coach to burn his two timeouts early in the set.
Kendahl Davenport made a major block to put the Red Wolves ahead 16-7 and all the momentum was in A-State’s favor. Towards the end of the set, the visitors caused their own problems. First the Chanticleer’s fell victim to a service error by Petrenko shortly followed by another service error by Jelena Prolic. The set only got worse for Prolic who later committed a return error.
Madison Brown finished the set with a kill to give the Red Wolves a 25-17 second set victory.
First Set
Both teams tried to find their footing early in the first set and neither team really grabbed any momentum through the first 25 points. Coastal Carolina eventually started to pull away after taking the lead 13-12 and then increasing that lead to 16-12 forcing A-State head coach Santiago Restrepo into a timeout.
Even after the timeout, the Red Wolves never found their way back into the set. The Chanticleers brought the set to match point at 24-16 before Timber Terrell hit back-to-back kills to give the Red Wolves a small chance at 24-18. Coastal ended up winning the set 25-18.
The Chanticleer’s star Nemeth finished the first set with eight kills and four digs.
Looking Ahead
The Red Wolves head to in-state foe Little Rock on Oct. 19. First service is set for 6:30 p.m.
