2020’s Super Bowl Halftime Show: A Blend of Culture

Article by Dakota Maggard

This year was the 54th annual Super Bowl and, like all since 1991, there was a halftime show. This year’s halftime show saw the wonderful talents of Shakira, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, J Balvin, and Emme Muniz.

Looking at this halftime show, like many others, one can see a recurring theme of men and women in hardly any sort of clothing. I dislike how much this show highlights and seems to sexualize the male and female body. Actually, it almost gives the feeling that it’s intention was to arouse as the movements of the dancers and singers seemed very obscene.

However, one element of the halftime show that I did enjoy was the diversity in languages and cultures. Rather than the whole event being catered to specifically those that speak English, the singers performed several songs in both English and Spanish. The event also managed to appeal to different cultures by having singers of Hispanic descent perform.

All in all, I’m left annoyed at the halftime show due to me wanting more than the same thing continuously, but I am also left feeling happy to see multiple cultures being catered to.
