Due to the COVID-19 outbreak across the United States, Arkansas State University transitioned to all online classes to protect students, faculty, and staff from contracting the virus and now students are questioning the future.
March 17, A-State transitioned to online classes for the remainder of the spring semester due to the coronavirus. Students will now have to check in for attendance via Google docs, Cisco Webex and Blackboard Learn, among other programs.
“I don’t appreciate that my freshman year ended prematurely”, an A-State freshman said.
With the virus sending citizens in a panic, schools have closed and transitioned to all online classes across the United States while some states have also issued curfews. Many students here on campus have already started checking out of the residence halls and going back to their homes. Students are also having mixed emotions due to their semester ending so early.
Zhedrick Jackson, a graduating senior and president of Brother 2 Brother commented on what his opinion of the school deciding to transition to online class was and he said he disagreed. He disagreed because most students don’t really do that well with online class and math becomes very difficult when it’s moved to online. Also, some students do better with hands-on learning. Also he was going to make sure he and many other seniors around campus get to have a commencement ceremony.
“We will have a lot more busy work and we as a whole are going to have to be successful the best way possible,” Jackson said.
Dr Larz Roberts, a journalism instructor agreed with the university’s decision
“It’s the best for the health and safety for our students, staff and faculty,” Roberts said.
He also stated that as faculty the job will be a little harder due to this fast transition as well. His advice to all students was to be careful.
Students are leaving college friends to go home while other students can’t, some collegiate careers are over, and multiple stores are running out of toilet paper for some odd reason.
