Animal Crossing’s Latest Massive Update – What Took Them So Long?

This is a list of every new/returning feature I have found in the New Horizons update since Friday. There may be things I have missed or have yet to find. This list will be updated for as long as possible. If you know of an update feature I’ve missed, please let me know at heraldopinion1921@gmail.com.

Returns

  • Kapp’n has returned and now waits at your island’s dock. For 1000 Nook Miles, he will take you to a random island, but only once per day. These islands have different conditions, such as different times of day, weathers, and seasons. While the rest of the Kappa family has not returned to the full game, they can be spoken to by calling Kapp’n to The Roost with his Amiibo. Crayon drawings presumably from Kapp’n’s daughter, Leila, can be spotted on the inside of Kapp’n’s boat. Kapp’n also still sings his songs during the journey, and there seem to be some new lyrics, though the tunes are of course the same.
  • Brewster now has a spot in the Museum. To unlock The Roost, Brewster’s cafe, you need to talk to Blathers, then locate the pigeon on one of Kapp’n’s mystery tours. After inviting him to your island, the Museum will go through renovations the next day, and then The Roost will be available. Inside The Roost, you can order coffee (multiple cups per day, unlike the 1-per-day in New Leaf) and invite amiibo characters to drink with you. After ordering enough coffee, Brewster will allow you to order coffee to-go. In New Leaf, ordering enough coffee allowed you to customize your drink and unlocked a coffee-serving minigame. It’s too early to say if those features are present in New Horizons. The coffee-making devices visible in The Roost have been updated to 2021 standards of artisanal coffee, though, and photos of other Animal Crossing characters like K.K. Slider and Blathers can be found hanging on the walls. Visually, The Roost is a very calming space, though like most of the museum it can seem pretty lonely.
  • Harriett has joined Harvey at the Co-Op, and has taken on his hippie dressing style.
  • Tortimer now stays at the Co-Op (explained below), and will give you access to your home storage.
  • Katrina now stays at the Co-Op, and has a fortune-telling booth.
  • The Gyroids have returned, and can be found by digging up Gyroid Fragments on mystery tours (and sometimes on your island). By burying the Fragments on your island and waiting a day, you can “grow” a variety of Gyroids that will dance along to music and make interesting noises. You can also place these on the wall (they generate their own shelves).
  • Ordinances can once again be set. By speaking to Isabelle, the player can set up one of four island ordinances: Beautiful, Early Bird, Night Owl, and Bell Boom. These are the same ordinances that were in New Leaf, and presumably work the same way: Beautiful will have villagers pull weeds, water flowers, and clean up trash; Early Bird will have shops open and villagers rise earlier; Night Owl will have shops and villagers open later; and Bell Boom will increase the price and value of all items.
  • Froggy Chair is back, and has different variations. Aside from the classic Froggy Chair, there are light pink, light blue, yellow, orange with black spots and dark blue with black spots Froggy Chairs. The Chairs can be bought from Nook’s Cranny or from Redd’s.
  • Villagers will now randomly visit your home while you are inside, and can ask for you to come visit their houses. They will also now ask you to deliver gifts to other villagers.

New Arrivals

  • Harv’s Island now has a Co-Op. When the player first visits after installing the update, Harv and Harriet will explain the space. It initially has seven mustachioed versions of Lloyd the fundraising gyroid, and donating 100,000 Bells to each Lloyd will set up permanent (?) locations for Kicks, Redd, Leif, Reese and Cyrus, Tortimer, Saharah and Katrina. (That’s a total of 700,000 bells!)
  • The camera now has a new Pro expansion, which will unlock a handheld camera mode and add painting, retro, surveillance and fish-eye lens filters to the camera. The expansion can be purchased with Nook Miles in the (main house thing)
  • You can now move in spaces half as wide as before, making it easier to navigate and decorate your space. Your character will move in a sideways motion.
  • A group stretching exercise can now be accessed in the main plaza. By interacting with the boombox, players and a selection of characters on the island will stand in the plaza and go through a stretching routine. Players can choose to join in with button controls, or with motion controls. The motion controls are a little flimsy, but the chance to stand up and stretch with the game is an interesting addition.
  • Cooking and gardening have been added to the game. You can grow tomatoes, potatoes, sugar cane, carrots and wheat. You can find the plants necessary to grow these things on mystery islands, and Leif will sell crop starters when he visits your island.
  • You can find vines on some mystery tour islands. They can be used to climb cliffs without a ladder, and can be brought back to your island.
  • Isabelle now announces who’s visiting your island, though this is spotty. To get research for this article I time traveled to five game days and she only announced Kicks and Redd (two days). Events like campsite visitors seem to take priority.
  • When on journeys with Kapp’n, you can clap along by pressing the A button. In New Leaf, pressing the A button would skip the boat ride cutscene.
  • You can buy dusters from the Nooklings shop. It is unclear what they are for.
  • Blathers now sells posters for completed museum spaces. He will give you a poster for free first, and you can then buy additional posters.

Missing (Features that are still not in the game)

  • Isabelle’s brother Digby
  • Pelly, Phyllis, and Pete, the mail pelicans form New Leaf
  • Blanca, the white cat from the April Fool’s event
  • Booker and Copper, the police dogs who ran the Lost and Found in New Leaf
  • Gracie, who sold luxury clothing in New Leaf, is still completely absent from New Horizons.
  • Many players were hoping for a quality of life update to fix several small game annoyances. For example, you cannot access your storage while crafting.
