March 31st marks the annual International Transgender Day of Visibility. This day was first founded in 2010 by transgender activist Rachel Crandall in reaction to the lack of celebration of transgender individuals. This day celebrates the contributions of transgender people and empowering them to live authentically while raising awareness of the discrimination they face. It was also founded because of the frustration that the only well-known transgender holiday was Transgender Day of Remembrance, which honors those who have lost their lives due to hate crimes against transgender individuals.
On March 31st, 2021, Joe Biden became the first president to officially proclaim Transgender Day of Visibility and sign a proclamation in the White House regarding this event.
Joe Biden and his administration will announce actions that support the mental health of transgender youth, improve data representation for transgender people, and remove barriers that have made it difficult for transgender people to uphold government service jobs. The administration also announced the option for people to select “X” as a gender option on passports, allowing transgender and non-binary people to identify themselves appropriately. This plan will involve the collaboration of airlines, Department of Homeland Security, and Transportation Security Administration.
Joe Biden said during his presidential proclamation Wednesday evening, “Transgender people are some of the bravest Americans I know, and our nation and the world are stronger, more vibrant and more prosperous because of them… You belong, I have your back.”
