4/27 Pop Pick: Sonic The Hedgehog 2

The world’s fastest hedgehog returns to the big screen in the sequel to the first live action Sonic movie, where he is faced with new challenges and new life lessons. Sonic has adjusted to his new life in Montana under the supervision of Tom and Maddie Wachowski when Dr. Robotnik returns and he’s not alone. Knuckles the Echidna tags alongside Dr. Robotnik in a quest to find a magical emerald that will grant them unlimited power. Sonic and his sidekick Tails traveled around the world to get the emerald before Robotnik and Knuckles use it for their own evil devices.

This movie completely blew me away. I had no previous knowledge of the Sonic lore before walking into the theater, but the movie did such an amazing job setting up the plot and explaining the lore so that I was completely up to speed. The animation was stellar and incredibly life-like while maintaining the cartoon caricatures of the Sonic characters. Jim Carrey, who played Dr. Robotnik, stayed true to the menacing nature of the villain while being impossible to take seriously as a villain. Tails served as the perfect sidekick for Sonic as he was the brains and Sonic was the determined and childlike hero.

My only criticism for the movie is that one subplot, which features Dr. Robotnik’s assistant Agent Stone, who became a barista after a former banishment from the mushroom planet after the first movie, was a bit long and boring. The movie felt like it had a lot of filler and unnecessary plot twists. One of the plot twists featured a wedding that turned into a sting to bring down heroes and the wedding falling apart. This felt a bit unnerving and this plot twist could have been executed differently.

The humor of the movie and the overall development of the plot kept me watching. I will definitely be watching it again once it streams.
