A-State track athletes succeed at Red Wolves Open

Sophomore mid-distance runner Cheyenne Melvin (in the picture above) was one of seven Red Wolf athletes to win event titles, while breaking the 800-meter facility record with a 2:08.67 time. 

Senior distance runner Kayla Wade finished fifth with a 2:18.34 and sophomore distance runner Hannah McLaughlin placed 17th with a personal best time of 2:25.64.

Senior distance runner Sophie Leathers won the women’ 5000-meter with a 17:05.10 time. Senior distance runner Cash Kunkel finished second place in the men’s 5000-meter with a 14:45.04 time.

Sophomore thrower Willem Coertzen won the men’s shot put with a throw of 17.68 meters to rank sixth in school history. Sophomore thrower Jacob Tracy finished right behind Coertzen with a second place finish and a 15.87-meter throw. Tracy also won the discus throw with a 52.41-meter throw. 

Senior jumper Sydney Lane won the women’s high jump with a 1.70-meter jump, while senior Camryn Newton-Smith placed second in 100-meter hurdles with a 14.02 time. 

The Red Wolves will travel to Starkville, Miss. on April 28-29 for the Maroon and White Invite.
