Diamond Watson, a senior computer and information technology major from Wheatley, Arkansas, serves as president of NPHC.
“It is just to help Red Wolves for St. Jude raise some money because we are all service based organizations,” Watson said. “Our purpose is to get out into the community, or just on our campus to try to help make a difference. So, we’re going to do our part.”
The walk cost $5 for students and $10 for faculty, staff and alumni.
Morgan Ripley, a junior exercise science major from Searcy, Arkansas, serves as executive director of Red Wolves for St. Jude. She said this year the organization added some incentives to encourage people to participate in the walk.
“We’re going to be having more giveaways that we’ll be able to give out at the end,” Ripley said. “NPHC is going to have some stickers that everyone that’s walking will get and we’ll also bring some 50% off cards from 7 Brew. Then, we’re going to have giveaways at the end, like T-shirts and buttons.”
This is the second year the organizations have hosted this walk. Last year, NPHC reached out to Red Wolves for St. Jude to create the event. This year, Red Wolves for St. Jude asked NPHC to host the walk with them again.
Watson said NPHC plans to make this a yearly event.
Joe Green, a junior finance major from Little Rock, is a member of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., an organization within NPHC.
“We were founded on the principles of brotherhood, scholarship and service. So, this is just a part of me taking care of the service portion,” Green said.
Cindy Gomez, a junior business administration major from Jonesboro, serves as president of Hermandad de Sigma Iota Alpha, Inc., a Latin-based sorority. She participated in the walk with other members of SIA.
“I know that NPHC mentioned that it was for the kids and I started looking into it more and I really just wanted to help out and donate,” Gomez said.
All the money raised will go toward Red Wolves for St. Jude’s fundraising goal.
“Our goal this year is $70,000 and so we want to reach out to as many people as possible and get as many people involved in that as we can,” Ripley said.
