
Arkansas State University students have access to on campus tutoring centers that are free to use and accessible.
Students can make appointments to receive tutoring on the app Penji, by clicking the tutoring tab in MyAstate, which directs you to the Penji website.
”If you don’t see the tutoring that you need in a particular center. You can make a request within the app,” director of Learning Support Services, Kelly Listenbee said. “The request comes to any one of our directors and then we work to build the support that a student needs.”
Most tutors are graduate students making tutoring peer to peer.
Jessica Tran, a graduate student studying English from Crossett, works as a tutor in the Writing Center. She said the atmosphere of tutoring is more relaxed than the classroom.
“We have a lot of experience with reading and writing under our belts but we’re not in the position of professor so there’s no intimidation between student and tutor.” Tran said.
Learning Support Services is on the third floor of the library and offers tutoring in general education classes.
Academic Success Coaching is a program Learning Support Services offers that helps students with general academic skills, such as how to study and manage time.
The Writing Center is open to students, faculty and staff. It’s on the third floor of the library.
Students are not limited to using the Writing Center for help with school work. The Writing Center can help with any outside writing from creative writing to resumes.
The Writing center can be useful for any point in the writing process.
“We can do anything from helping students brainstorm to helping them make sure that their voice is consistent throughout their text.” said Tabatha Simpson-Farrow, director of the Writing Center.
The Katherine Overstreet Logan (KOL) Mathematics Learning Commons is located in room 201 of the Computer Science and Math building.
KOL offers a wide range of subjects students can be tutored in.
Drop in tutoring is available online or in person Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m.–2 p.m. and 1 p.m. on Fridays if tutors are available.
Tutoring for World Languages and Cultures are available in room 4141 of Humanities and Social Sciences.
Conversation Tables for students studying Spanish and French are available for students to practice.
Conversation Table Times:
- Elementary Spanish conversation tables are open Wednesday from 1-2 p.m.
- Intermediate Spanish conversation tables are open Tuesday 2-3 p.m.
- French conversation tables are open Monday 5-6 p.m.
The Smart Center offers tutoring to students in Science and calculus subjects, with in-person tutoring in room 553 of Lab Sciences West. Services are offered Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The Communications Center is to help students with any assignment where they have to speak, but can also help students with things outside of the classroom such as interviewing or giving a speech at a wedding.
Student coaches can help with organizing a speech, overcoming speaking anxiety, citing sources and creating visual aids.
The Communications Center has equipment to record visuals and audio so students can rewatch their work after their appointment. It is on the third floor of the library.
The Academic Success Center is located in the Performance Enhancement Center and is for student athletes.
The center offers tutoring, career planning and mentoring to student athletes.
Tran said the tutoring centers are all unique from one another because they have different tutoring styles.
“My best advice is for students to come in with something they know they need help with.” Tran said.
