Red Wolves Volleyball crushes Louisiana-Monroe

Arkansas State Volleyball took on Louisiana-Monroe at home last Friday and Saturday, and swept the Warhawks in both games.

The first game started off shaky for the Red Wolves with the Warhawks having the lead for the majority of the first set, beating the Red Wolves 15-9. However, serving errors from the Warhawks and kills helped the Red Wolves to tie up the set and eventually take the lead, winning the set 25-21.

The second set started off back and forth until a kill by outside hitter Devyn Lewis started the Red Wolves on a 6-point scoring streak, bringing the score to 15-10. ULM got another point before another score streak begun by another kill from Lewis, bringing the score to 20-11 before the Red Wolves win the set 25-13 

The third and final set of the game was much closer than the previous ones. After an early lead of 14-5, the Warhawks made some substitutions and soon the score was 20-19. ULM then went on a scoring spree, being a point away from winning the set at 24-23 until the Red Wolves scored, tying it up. However, the Red Wolves would win it 29-27 because of an attack error by Warhawks middle blocker Madeline Villarreal.

By the end of the third set, Arkansas State had 13 kills, 12 errors, 54 total attempts and a .056 hitting percentage. The total after all three sets was 43 kills, 23 errors, 139 total attempts and a .144 team hitting percentage.

Devyn Lewis recorded the most kills of the night with 12. Libero Sarah Martinez and libero Mia Maloney each had 2 aces during the game.  Martinez had almost double the amount of digs as any other player during the game, recording 24. Middle blocker Haley Glunz got 7 blocks and setter Erin Madigan had the most assists of the night with 26.

Saturday, the Red Wolves took an early 13-7 lead before going on a scoring run to add on to the lead, making it 22-7 before ULM scored again in a dominant set for A-State, winning 25-9.

The second set was more back and forth than the first, with the score being 15-14 before a kill by right-side hitter Abby Harris led the Red Wolves to score 9 unanswered points. ULM attempted to mount a comeback, but the Red Wolves finished the set with a score of 28-25. 

The third and final set of the match started similarly to the second set until ULM scored 4 in a row which gave them a 15-11 lead. Soon enough, the Red Wolves went on their own scoring spree, scoring 6 unanswered points and making the match 18-16. Arkansas State scored 4 points to end the set and the game, with a final score of 25-18.

Outside hitter Grace Wiley and Devyn Lewis both recorded 8 kills during the match. Erin Madigan had 3 aces, and Haley Glunz had the most blocks of the night with 5. Sarah Martinez tied Lousiana-Monroes’s  Cameron Rogers with 15 digs and Madigan added in 19 assists.  The Red Wolves are now 5-1 in conference and 15-3 overall.Their next match is at Texas State on October 18 and 19.
