It’s December, finally.
Although fall is my favorite season, winter is a close second. There’s something so beautiful and refreshing about this time of year: colorful displays of Christmas lights, the scents of peppermint and gingerbread and soft music by an open fire. It’s pretty and peaceful.
Living in Northeast Arkansas can, however, dampen the promise of a White Christmas — backyards filled with snow and houses christened with icicles. But, you don’t need snowflakes to get into the holiday spirit.
So, I’ve put together a list of events this month to help spread some holiday cheer.
DJA’s Joy Fest 2024
The Downtown Jonesboro Alliance is hosting the biggest holiday celebration right on Union St. on Dec. 7. The annual RightFiber Christmas tree will be lit and local vendors will be set up for an evening of fun, hot cocoa, gifts and live performances on the Hytrol Stage.
Christmas at the Park at Joe Mack Campbell Park
This drive-through winter wonderland spans over half a mile long and features an estimated 400,000 lights, lighting the way for guests to enjoy with friends and family.
It officially opened on Thanksgiving and will run through most of December, with the final night on Dec. 23.
In addition to the lights, there are decorative displays for photos, hot chocolate to enjoy, caroling, scavenger hunts and opportunities to take photos with Santa!
With more events scheduled throughout the month, be sure to check their website, christmasattheparknea.com, for future planning.
The 77th Annual Jonesboro Christmas Parade
The parade’s theme this year is “Movies on Main Street,” and will feature commercial floats and our very own A-State marching band. So, I wouldn’t miss attending the parade this Friday!
In case you want something more crafty and homey, I would recommend attending these two events.
The Emmanuel Benefit Christmas Concert
This will take place this Saturday at 7 p.m., at the Fowler Center where all donations will be sent to the Arkansas Baptist Children and Family Ministries. Some lovely music, love and charity – great for the season of giving!
Christmas Market and Art Show
This event takes place on Dec. 14 at 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Brookland, Arkansas. Local vendors will display their arts and crafts for guests to shop. Chairs Cottage Bakery will be there offering soups and sourdough bread, while Nelson Film’s will provide mini photo sessions.
Very Magical Artsy Christmas Craft Show
This event, on Dec. 14 at 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Hilton Garden Inn Jonesboro, allows guests to shop for unique gifts for family and friends for the holiday with the entry fee being only a dollar!
And if none of these events fit your style, I have a personal favorite recommendation for celebrating the season…
Christmas light drive
Jonesboro has beautiful neighborhoods that outdo themselves each year with their Christmas decorations. Places like Sage Meadows and Ridge Point offer some of the best light displays around, perfect for a stroll or a drive with friends, hot cocoa in hand.
How you spend the holidays doesn’t matter as much as who you spend them with, but I hope these recommendations spark your interest in local holiday activities this month!
