The women’s Arkansas State Red Wolves extended their win streak to eight on the road against the South Alabama Jaguars with an 82-71 win.
The Red Wolves started strong with guard Anna Griffin scoring a three-pointer. Arkansas State only lost the lead early in the quarter but quickly gained it back after two minutes, keeping the lead by the end of the first at 22-17 Red Wolves.
During the first quarter, the Red Wolves were 7-20 for field goals, 4-12 on three-pointers, and 4-4 on free throws. They also scored six second-chance points against the Jaguars’ two.
In the second quarter, the Red Wolves and the Jaguars traded leads throughout its entirety. Arkansas State, however, started and ended the quarter ahead, going into halftime up four points against South Alabama at 42-38.
Red Wolves shot 8-13 at the free throw line, were 2-8 for three-pointers, and 5-16 for field goals. Arkansas State scored the only second-chance points of the quarter, scoring three points.
Something ignited within the Red Wolves offense after halftime as in the third quarter they scored 25 points, the most throughout the entire game, seven of which were unanswered in the last minute and a half. A-State didn’t lose the lead once during the quarter and went into the fourth 10 points ahead of South Alabama.
Statistically wise, field goals and three-pointers were the best they were all game with 9-15 and 2-4 respectively. Free throws, however, were the worst they were all game at 5-9. The second chance points this quarter reflected the same they were in the second quarter with three for the Red Wolves and none for the Jaguars.
At the start of the fourth, Arkansas State almost doubled their lead, scoring nine unanswered points which extended their lead to 19 before South Alabama managed to score. Even though the Jaguars scored multiple times back-to-back, the Red Wolves kept an 11-point lead and ended the game, winning 82-71.
During the fourth quarter, the Red Wolves didn’t shoot any free throws but scored 1-8 of their three-pointers and 7-20 of their field goals. Like the first quarter, the Red Wolves scored six second-chance points while the Jaguars scored two.
By the end of the game, the Red Wolves were 28-71 in field goals, 9-32 in three-pointers, and 17-26. They had 47 rebounds, 20 of those offensive and 27 defensive. Defensively, A-State had five blocks and 12 steals during the game.
Guard Zyion Shannon had the most minutes and scored the most points in the game for the Red Wolves. On the defensive side of the ball, forward Nissa Sam-Grant recorded seven rebounds for the team.
Zyion Shannon won Queen of the Court during the game. She scored 14 points, recorded five rebounds and was 5-5 on the free throw front. Guard Mimi McCollister was named Heart of a Red Wolf after the game with 10 points, four rebounds and two assists.
The Red Wolves continue their undefeated 2025 year and stay second in the Sun Belt Conference with their win. Arkansas State is now 12-7 overall and 8-1 in conference play. South Alabama is 0-8 in conference play after this game against the Red Wolves and 4-15 overall.
The Arkansas State Red Wolves play the third place Troy Trojans at home on Jan. 30 at 7 p.m.
