Extra pronouns have unnecessarily complicated society

In President Donald Trump’s inaugural speech, he said his government would only recognize two genders: male and female. And he is right.

For the 2024 election, within the Republican Party, there have been ongoing discussions regarding transgender people and whether gender-affirming care should be available and accessible to the public – specifically to minors. With the growth of the transgender community in the United States, the rise of other gender orientations has also started discourse regarding pronoun usage.

Pronouns have become way too complicated and our society has accepted more pronouns than only the ones truly needed, such as she/her and he/him. It has created so many more unnecessary pronouns in today’s society. Neopronouns such as ze, hir, ze and zir were created to identify people who label themselves as nonbinary, gender queer and gender non-conforming.

There should only be the “traditional” pronouns.

In 2020, a lot of people had nothing to do, so they often sat on their butt at home and did nothing. During this time, a lot of social justice issues were going on, such as the Black Lives Matter and

advocacy for individuals “coming out” regarding their sexuality and gender identity.

According to data from the Common App, approximately 3.2% of college applicants selected pronouns beyond a single set of “she/her” or “he/him” in 2023, indicating a small but growing percentage of people using more diverse pronouns.

As a Christian, it’s always been my belief that gender and sex should be considered the same, especially at a time when our current society, these two are seen as different.

Gender identity and pronoun usage have infiltrated not just in our social outings, but in the media.

We are seeing social media websites having options for “others” when discussing gender identity and even providing tags of preemptive pronounce choices which consist of they/them and at times, neopronouns.

These pronouns have even changed applications and the way people use them in books.

Having these extra pronouns created gender and sex to be broader than what it truly is. Broadness in pronouns could create social dysfunction. It can lead to misunderstanding and cause people to be ignorant about them if they have not taken the time to effectively learn them.

Additionally, extra pronouns could cause discomfort for some individuals regarding the need to constantly monitor pronoun usage. In certain situations, individuals might intentionally misuse pronouns to be disrespectful or antagonistic which could cause a lot of harm to other individuals.

It would just be simpler if we just stuck to traditional pronouns and stuck with the ones that were assigned to us at birth.

If Trump thinks there are two genders meaning he only believes in four pronouns then he should not be shamed for believing so.

It is time for us as a country to stop being divided by our president and create unity by taking a step back from neopronouns and begin using traditional pronouns only.
