This Week’s Pop Pick: “POWER HANGRY” by Melina KB

COURTESY OF GENIUS

Melina KB has added two more songs to her sophomore album with “THROWBACK” and “Lady Justice,” turning “Power Hungry” into “Power Hangry.”

Using her theatrical pop genre, the songs in the original album explore unique story lines that make for a free trip to Broadway.

Melina’s music does extremely well in telling a story through the use of creative lyricism. In “THROWBACK,” Melina paints the picture of a high school reunion, using metaphors and creating vivid pictures with her words.

The instrumental in the background is also extremely energetic during the song, giving an upbeat and groovy backing to the story created with the song.

“Lady Justice” truly goes back to Melina’s roots when it comes to music. One of her oldest and most famous songs, “I’ve Had Enough,” is about standing up for what you believe in and what’s right. It’s about leaving toxicity in the past and women standing together. Melina brings that theme back with the second new song in the deluxe album.

On Instagram, Melina said she started to write “Lady Justice” after the election results were confirmed. It’s a complete 180 from the rest of the songs in the album instrumental-wise as this song is a piano ballad against the other upbeat songs in her discography.

“Lady Justice” is about women taking back their power in a patriarchal society. It’s about women being scared for their safety and how their word won’t work against others (“If it’s your word against mine, they’ll wipe your record clean.”)

All of the songs within this album are examples of lyrical genius with how well the listeners are transported into the picture Melina paints for each of the songs. The whole album is extremely diverse, no two songs being alike, each song exploring different themes and stories while all being under an umbrella of retaking the power you’ve lost in some way.

Even if you don’t enjoy theatrical songs, I suggest giving Melina KB’s music a listen. Her music is extremely powerful and relatable in some way.

Official Score: 10/10
