The Arkansas State Rugby Club started their fall season off with a bang as they utterly dominated the Iowa Central Community College Tritons 121-0.
A-State’s defense held strong for the entirety of the match, and this fact was highlighted by the first score of the game. The Tritons mishandled the ball and it was recovered and taken for a try by Red Wolves center wing Aidan Hertz.
The Tritons struggled to even move the ball much in the first half, which was not the case for the Red Wolves. A-State powered over the Tritons and after getting the lineout near the goal line, lock Tiarnan O’Mongain dove over to get the next try and make the score 14-0.
The Red Wolves continued to dominate and at the half the score was 50-0, with flyhalf Warrick Day scoring nearly untouched on a punt return taken from midfield. This did not change in the second half. In fact, it got worse for the Tritons.
The Red Wolves opened the second half by taking it to the house quickly. Scrum half Sange Mbuto got the try with an assist from back rower Liam McGregor to make the score 55-0.
The Red Wolves continued to run the score up and by the end of the game A-State stood victorious with an extremely lopsided score of 121-0.
With the victory the Red Wolves move to 1-0 on the season and will travel to Miami Gardens, Florida to take on the St Thomas Bobcats in another non-conference match. The Red Wolves are currently ranked fifteenth in Division 1-A.
