Something’s in the water in the state of Indiana.
Nearly every major sports team from the Hoosier state is succeeding greatly as of late. Their NFL team, the Indianapolis Colts, are 3-0 for the first time since the 2009 season even after predictions from expert analysts had them chalked up as a bottom of the NFL team. In the WNBA, the Indiana Fever are defying all odds and advancing through the playoffs even without their star player, Caitlin Clark.
Not to mention one of their college football teams, the Indiana Hoosiers, is going on a tear, staying undefeated so far, including a recent rout of the ninth ranked team in the country, the Illinois Fighting Illini, ending with that game with a score of 63-10.
However, their biggest success from the past few years has been their NBA team. The Indiana Pacers are fresh off of a successful 2024-25 campaign, which became one of the most unexpected playoff runs in league history.
They came in as the underdogs to nearly every series, and somehow made their way to the NBA Finals, where the series was pushed to seven games against the Oklahoma City Thunder. An Achilles tendon tear ended their run in game seven as Tyrese Haliburton was ruled out for the rest of the game and the entire 2025-26 season.
In all of these situations, Indiana has seemed like the underdogs. Everyone besides Hoosiers doubted their success and did not see them achieving much.
However, each team is taking that pressure and proving their doubters wrong. Each of their successes are patterns that cross between the teams.
Over on the hardcourt, the Indiana Fever and Indiana Pacers show the importance of the draft to success in their respective leagues. The Fever’s most obvious draft success has been Caitlin Clark, the phenom from the Iowa Hawkeyes. In her first season with the team, she broke not only rookie records, but league records as well.
Clark led the league in assists and three pointers, but also shattered the records for most assists in a single game and season by any WNBA player and the most points by a point guard in a season. She also became the first rookie to record a triple-double and worked her way up to third in total triple-doubles in her second season before a groin injury sidelined her indefinitely.
One key player led to the Fever’s success and helped bring in other talented players who wanted to thrive off of Clark’s playmaking ability. However, on the flip side, the Indiana Pacers are using the draft to find players to fulfill specific team needs instead of an all-around star.
The Pacers have struck gold in the past few NBA drafts with players who have specific talents that add to the team. Their 2022 picks, Bennedict Mathurin and Andrew Nembhard, were chosen for their scoring and defending, respectively.
This past season, Nembhard thrived as a lockdown defender at the shooting guard position, making the opposing players fight in what Pacers fans call “Nembhell”. Meanwhile, Mathurin has found success on the bench, pouring in points while the starters were subbed out.
In 2023, the Pacers went with Jarace Walker and Ben Sheppard in the draft. Walker was known for his defending and rebounding ability, which helped back up the starting center Myles Turner this past season. Sheppard, being something of a jack of all trades, was chosen to fit into the rotation immediately as a role player who could score and defend while the starters rested.
While maybe not having an impact on their own, each of the Pacers’ picks combined in the rotation have led to their success the past two seasons.
Meanwhile on the football field, the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Hoosiers have shown how the right coaches can turn a program around.
Despite their shortcomings in the past few seasons, the Colts have found success so far this season with Daniel Jones at quarterback. After going through multiple different quarterbacks the past few seasons, Daniel Jones has stuck as the man who fit perfectly into head coach Shane Steichen’s system.
By playing to Jones’ strengths and working around his weaknesses, Steichen has completely reinvented this Colts’ offense. As Jones thrives in passing the ball, Steichen continues to generate points through star running back Jonathan Taylor as well.
Steichen has found the perfect balance of passing and running the ball this season where past seasons have found an overreliance on one of the two due to a lack of offense generated from the other.
The Indiana Hoosiers football team found themselves in the same boat with a thriving team thanks to their spectacular coach, Curt Cignetti. As soon as he was in as head coach, the team went from an unranked team near the bottom of the Big Ten conference to a playoff team with a genuine shot at a national championship.
Even with people doubting another season of success from the Hoosiers, their campaign from last year has continued forward, proving to everyone that their ranking is no fluke.
With their drafting and coaching in Indiana, nearly all of the major teams from the Hoosier state have found immense success. Their triumphs are a sign that this state values its sports, and that this is the blueprint to success in sports.
