Official album cover for Tame Impala’s “Deadbeat.”
Tame Impala, the band that is actually just one guy named Kevin Parker, released his new album “Deadbeat” on Friday, and it was pretty bland.
None of these songs really stand out from one another on the album. I guess this is something acceptable for a concept album, but I don’t even get the notion that this was a concept album so it’s just good for putting me to sleep.
There were some decent songs on here, but for an album of 12 songs, there were just too many skips on this. The album opens pretty strong with “My Old Ways”, which had a great transition into the main beat of the song. I actually thought that the track had done a smooth change.
The next five songs sound exactly the same. Slow, soft, kind of sleepy. That actually pretty much sums up the album, I remember that Tame Impala usually had a bit more sauce than this album has, but I guess times have changed.
This is definitely a different sound that Tame Impala is trying, and in that regard I think Parker did a respectable job. I know the glazers will not like people saying it’s mid, but they can’t all be bangers.
My favorite songs on this have to be “Piece of Heaven”, “Obsolete”, and “Ethereal Connection”. All these songs are near the end of the album, which is a problem if I have to listen to six or seven songs worth of mid before getting to the good stuff.
Don’t get me wrong, I like Tame Impala. But honestly, I can’t give a good review to the same song being recycled for three fourths of an album.
Official Score: 5/10
