Tuesday marked 20 years of “Pride and Prejudice.” The 2005 movie, starring Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfadyen, remains a favorite of romance and history fans alike.
The movie is based on the iconic Jane Austen novel and is just one of many adaptations of the story. It follows Elizabeth Bennett, an outspoken eldest sister, and her budding romance with upper-class Mr. Darcy, whose haughty attitude threatens their relationship.
The story focuses on overcoming one’s flaws for love, a timeless lesson that we can all learn from. Mr. Darcy must defeat his pride in his wealth and status to respect Elizabeth’s family. Elizabeth must conquer her prejudice against Mr. Darcy and see his true character underneath the mask he puts on. Hence, the title “Pride and Prejudice.”
When it was released, the movie was an instant hit. It grossed over $121 million worldwide on a $28 million budget. The movie received four Academy Award nominations and won director Joe Wright a BAFTA award.
Fans praised the movie for keeping with the novel’s original storyline and themes, while adding beautiful cinematography and well-rounded character work. Although it is a period piece, the film’s focus on love and self-reflection resonates with a modern audience.
Wright’s “Pride and Prejudice” hosts an array of memorable scenes that viewers rave about to this day. Perhaps the most iconic of these is Mr. Darcy’s confession and proposal in the rain. Here, Darcy admits his love for Elizabeth, while in the same breath insulting her family and upbringing.
Another unforgettable scene is Mr. Darcy’s second proposal to Elizabeth. After being accused of tempting Darcy by his aunt, Elizabeth takes a morning walk. Out of the fog marches Mr. Darcy, who has heard of his aunt’s visit and wants to set things right.
Austen’s story is the height of romance and an exceptional example of how love can bring out the best in people. Elizabeth and Darcy must work on themselves to truly love and understand each other.
The film itself is truly incredible. It was filmed all across England for historical accuracy and stunning visuals. The costuming and language are excellent and add to the movie’s depth.
Of course, it certainly helps that Knightley and Macfadyen were already well-known and well-liked performers, not to mention attractive. Knightley nails Elizabeth’s whimsy and Macfadyen perfectly plays the stoic heart-throb.
This movie is one of the first I recommend to people. It’s perfect for relaxing background noise or a rom-com movie night. Even after watching it as many times as I have, it never gets any less dreamy.
“Pride and Prejudice” might be celebrating its twentieth birthday, but it is no less iconic or impactful than it was in 2005.
