While Easter does not have nearly as many movies surrounding the holiday like Christmas does, it does have a few iconic ones with unforgettable characters.
“Hop” tells the story of E.B, the Easter Bunny’s son, who does not want to follow in his father’s footsteps and instead dreams of being a drummer in a rock band. He leaves Easter Island and heads to Hollywood to pursue his dreams.
But, Fred, an unemployed man played by James Marsden, hits E.B. with his car. The two become unlikely and reluctant friends and go on a journey to get E.B. a job as a drummer and get Fred a job in general.
Critics gave this film a very mixed set of reviews, saying it has crude humor, horrible writing and overall lacks creativity. It received a 25% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes.
Contrary to what critics would want audiences to believe, however, “Hop” was actually a big success at the box office, making $184 million worldwide against a $63 million budget. The film even opened at number one in the United States and Canada and held that spot for two weeks.
While Christmas and Easter are both technically Christian holidays, Christmas has Santa and his elves in the North Pole who make presents all year so they can deliver them to kids on Christmas Eve. Easter doesn’t have the same lore that Christmas does. Yes, kids know that the Easter Bunny comes and puts candy in their Easter baskets, but what else is there?
Tim Hill, the director of “Hop,” and Chris Meledandri, producer, wanted to reveal a side of Easter mythology that nobody’s ever seen before and create a world for the Easter Bunny similar to Santa and the North Pole.
Because there really isn’t any mythology surrounding the Easter Bunny, Hill and Meledandri were able to do almost anything they wanted when creating E.B. and Easter Island.
Is “Hop” the greatest movie you’re ever going to see? No, far from it.
But is it a good time the whole time? Yes, definitely.
If you want to watch a movie that has a bunny special-ops team, an evil chick determined to become a dictator, a rabbit who just wants to follow his dreams and David Hasselhoff, then “Hop” is just the movie for you.
