Hunter Summers, a redshirt junior wide receiver for the Arkansas State football team, had 84 receptions for a total of 1,043 yards and nine touchdowns in his 33 games for the Red Wolves.
On Wednesday, he was arrested on suspicion of third-degree domestic battering. On Thursday, he was released. On Saturday, the Red Wolves won the homecoming game without him with receptions being spread to the three wide receivers on the field.
The Report
On Wednesday, Officer Robert Kary was dispatched to North Park Quads Building 2 in reference to a domestic disturbance.
Upon arrival, Kary spoke to the victim who said she came back from an 11:00 a.m. class and got into bed with the arrestee Summers. The victim said that he saw that she reacted with a fire emoji to a post by one of Summers’ ex-football teammates.
The victim said Summers asked her if she thought that was “fucking funny.” The victim said that Summers began to yell at her and degrade her with slurs. This then progressed to Summers slamming the victim’s phone on the ground repeatedly causing it to crack.
The victim said that Summers grabbed her by her neck area and slammed her against the wall onto a picture frame causing red injury marks on her back. The victim said that Summers threatened to punch out her window and break her school laptop.
Summers also took the victim’s glasses off her face and began to bend them in an attempt to break them.
The victim received all resources under Laura’s Law, a domestic violence and victim rights law in Arkansas, and said she was afraid of what Arrestee #1 would be capable of in the aftermath of his arrest.
After speaking with the victim, Kary then spoke to a witness who said that she was in her room with the door shut. The witness said she heard yelling and could hear the victim say “I’m sorry” before hearing something fall on the floor and hearing the victim tell Summers to get out.
Kary then traveled over to the Football Operations Center to speak with Summers. Upon arrival, Summers was read his Miranda rights prior to questioning and agreed to answer further questions.
Summers said that he and the victim got into an argument and admitted to slamming the victim’s phone on the ground, but denied ever putting his hands on her.
Summers was placed under arrest for Domestic Battery 3rd Degree. His handcuffs were checked for proper fit before he was placed into the back of a patrol unit and seatbelted in for safety.
Summers was transported to the Craighead County Detention Center where he was turned over to jail staff.
