KRISHNAN COLLINS | SPORTS EDITOR: Nadia El-Shami delivers a cross into the box in the Red Wolves’ 6-1 win over Jackson State.

Led by a Sarah Sodoma hat trick, the Arkansas State women’s soccer team defeated Jackson State 6-1 Thursday afternoon. Sodoma reached fourth place on the Red Wolves’ all time scoring list as the St. Louis native now has 17 goals to her name for A-State.

The Red Wolves improved to 3-1 on the season with the win over the Tigers. This marked four consecutive games Jackson State has lost by four goals or more as the Tigers dropped to 0-4 on the year.

Sophia Restrepo has made the most of her opportunities this season after missing all of last Fall with a devastating knee injury. The sophomore continued her rich vein of form and scored the opening goal for the Red Wolves today in the 11th minute.

Sodoma tacked on the Red Wolves’ second goal of the afternoon just a few minutes later to put A-State up 2-0 within 15 minutes.

The Red Wolves took a 3-0 lead in the 27th minute when Julianna Coates played a perfect ball over the top of the Tiger’s defense. Sodoma ran on to the ball and finished with her right foot for her second goal of the match.

While A-State dominated possession in the first half, the Red Wolves never really got another great look on goal. Coates put a free kick on frame but the shot was comfortably collected by Jackson State goal keeper Bianca Clemente.

Olivia Smith pulled off some great footwork late in the first half to get herself past a defender. Smith’s potential cross or shot did not trouble the Tiger’s goal.

Maggie Ertl increased A-State’s advantage to four goals early in the second half. In the 50th minute of the match the forward ran onto a ball played by Abby Glockzin and calmly finished the chance past Clemente.

Lindsey Brochu used a bit of quality and skill to skin a Jackson State defender before putting the ball on a plate for Sodoma. Sodoma finished the ball first-time to complete her hat trick and give the Red Wolves a 5-0 lead in the 69th minute.

Just moments later Sodoma turned from scorer to provider and delivered a great ball to Hailey Furio. Furio scored for the second time this season and put the Red Wolves up 6-0.

Despite being outplayed most of the game, Jackson State managed to grab a goal late on in the match. Patricia Calderon beat A-State goal keeper Noel Miller from distance in the 75th minute bringing the game to a 6-1 scoreline.

Bailey Gellis almost added to A-State’s advantage when Lauren Johnson played a perfectly weighted pass over the top of the Tiger’s defense late in the match. Gellis still had work to do before putting a teasing shot on goal which Clemente batted wide. The match ended 6-1 to the Red Wolves.

A-State travels to Texas Tech on Sunday where the Red Wolves will take on yet another Big 12 Conference opponent. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
