Although the weather outside is frightful, that has not stopped numerous Arkansas State students from getting outside and enjoying the rare snow before it melts away.
The snowfall in Jonesboro had been frequent, giving the town plenty of reasons to get out and play. It began on Valentine’s Day, and the snow only picked up since then. In total, there were around eight inches of snow that stuck to the ground.

The type of snow that has fallen is drier, meaning it’s not a great type to have snowball fights with around campus. However, the snow did make for a great sledding surface.
Chris Sanders, a freshman accounting major from Little Rock said, “My friends and I went out at midnight and sledded down the intramural field when it was just half an inch of snow using milk crates, cardboard boxes and bucket lids.”
Since snow does not come around often in Northeast Arkansas, people have been trying to make the most of the weather. Throughout this week, hundreds of students have gone sledding all around campus to enjoy the weather while it lasts. Sometimes the time of day does not matter, as people have stayed out as late as 3 a.m. tearing up the slopes.
The best part of it all is that sledding is a great activity to do right now in the middle of this pandemic. It is tough to stay safe around friends but being outside makes it safer.
“It was especially fun to play with some great friends from college,” Sanders said.
Although sledding is a fun way to hang out with friends, everyone should try to be as safe as possible. There have been some large wipeouts over the last couple days on the hill. If everyone makes sure to use precaution while sledding, it will be a great time.
