Is Y3K the new Y2K?

Y2K and Y3K are two popular fashion aesthetics popularized by idols and celebrities – and honestly, Y2K is so much better.

The only use for Y3K fashion is stage use, where reflecting lights and monochrome sequencing are necessary for catching people’s eyes. It was created for that purpose by idol groups (popular singers from Southern Asian cultures) like XG and Aespa as the main focus for this Y3K style. It became a trend in Asian countries and continued to spread to the Western world.

My biggest problem with Y3K is the material, as most of it is made from metallic and holographic style fabrics or fibers which are not only a waste of metallic resources and allow for increased pollution. It can cause major skin irritation or damage. The accessories also contain small pieces of metal, and in some rare cases can cause poisoning.

The bright bold patterns and intricate designs are also very impractical, as they are easy to stain and hard to clean. The sci-fi look is also not something I enjoy, and although I believe it is important to express yourself, I think it is a bit too much expression.

The aesthetic creates this “false sense of self” as it can be very fanatical. It focuses on making things look very technical or futuristic, and it can have similar effects to plastic surgery, where the image you create for yourself can overpower who you truly are. I do like some of the brighter colors, but the looks are just way too robotic and out there for me to enjoy. Y3K takes away from things that make us naturally beautiful.

Y2K is a much better choice because it is practical, inexpensive and accessible. Most people wear it even without knowing it’s a fashion style. The material for Y2K fashion won’t cause as much irritation as Y3K and it’s also easier to clean, making food stains (which would completely ruin anything in the Y3K fashion because of the neutral color scheme being the primary focus) an easy fix.

While Y3K goes for showmanship and performance, Y2K goes for nostalgia and playfulness – a more down-to-earth style that has a very casual aesthetic.

Y2K street fashion of Hollywood and rock music is my favorite staple of the aesthetic. I love baggy clothing, skinny jeans and sweaters. The more earthy colors and tones make my hair pop and look better on me. The more natural and human look is beautiful, and I don’t think Y3K can retain the natural human beauty.

Some of the most famous people who pioneered or wore Y2K fashion are Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Britney Spears and Ice Spice.

Out of 43 votes from the A-State student body: 41 voted for Y2K and 2 voted for Y3K for fashion preference.

Y2K fashion originated before we were born or while we were children, but the style is still a staple of how we dress, even if we changed it up a bit over time.

For Gen Z the consensus seems to be that Y2K is the better option and I agree. Y3K has its place on the runway but in terms of practicality, aesthetics and feel, Y2K is by far the better choice.
