Time is the most valuable resource available to us and how we choose to use it ultimately determines the life we live and the legacy we leave.
This focus on time and its use is at the heart of the new A24 film “We Live in Time,” a beautifully intimate and heart-wrenching tale of love, life and loss.
Andrew Garfield is Tobias, a down on his luck, soon to be divorced salesman with a heart of gold. Florence Pugh is Almut, a chef and restaurant owner who wasn’t even looking for love before she hit Tobias with her car.
In a comedic twist on the tried and true ‘meet cute’ trope that has become a Hollywood staple, Almut puts Tobias in the hospital after he wanders into traffic in a bathrobe on a return journey from a corner store to buy pens to sign his divorce papers.
After this fateful encounter, the film follows three separate timelines at different points in the pair’s relationship; their initial dating phase, their attempts to start a family and Almut’s cancer diagnosis.
The film is truly funny and full of Hollywood’s most under-used resource; sincerity.
There are no tongue in cheek moments, neither character is too cool or self aware to tell the other how they really feel and the ups and downs of their relationship portray a realistic love, for better or worse.
The performances are sublime, with Garfield portraying more emotional complexity with his eyes than some Academy Award winners and Pugh is truly the heart and soul of this movie, with the film primarily told from her perspective once she comes crashing into Tobias’ life.
This film was highly anticipated by many fans of both stars and it truly delivers on its promise to both warm and break your heart.
