Sabrina Carpenter’s newly released and seventh studio album, “Man’s Best Friend” dropped Friday, bringing about a significant, bold evolution in her pop persona and musical direction.

The album was recorded at New York’s Electric Lady Studios, and the album was co-produced by Carpenter, as well as praised producers Jack Antonoff and John Ryan, who have also contributed to the production of her previous work. 

The record spans approximately 38 minutes, and infuses elements of pop, disco-pop, funk, R&B, and synth-rock. This highlighted the expansion of her sound vocabulary, as well as her ability to perform these genres well. 

“Man’s Best Friend” leans into themes of sexual empowerment, female agency, and self-aware irony- which were all delivered with Carpenter’s sharp wit and astounding lyricism. 

She playfully critiques immaturity and toxic masculinity in tracks like “Manchild” and “Goodbye,” while “House Party,” “Tears,” and others use bold double meanings and humor to own the narrative. 

The album cover, which depicts Carpenter in a striking image of submission and dominance, sparked controversy for its provocative portrayal of sexual power dynamics. While some critics decried it as regressive, others praised its satirical edge and Carpenter’s bold artistic statement. 

In response to backlash, she released an alternate “approved by God” cover option, maintaining her unapologetic stance. 

Teen Vogue spoke highly of the album, as well as Carpenter’s commitment to her vision for herself as an artist. 

“This album cements Carpenter’s confident, boundary-pushing voice in pop, one unafraid to lean into social critique and taboo topics,” Teen Vogue said. 

Critics and publications have noted how the album frames heartbreak as a “party for disappointment,”combining emotional vulnerability with high-energy flair.
