The Arkansas State Red Wolves(2-1-3,0-0-1) opened their Sun Belt Conference season with a tie against the Troy Trojans(5-2-1,0-0-1).
Coming into the match, A-State averaged 3.4 goals per game compared to Troy’s 2.14, while allowing 1.4 goals per game to Troy’s 1. Last year, the Red Wolves tied with Troy, the only team ranked above them in the conference, and after a hard-fought contest this season, the outcome was once again a tie.
It was a grueling day for soccer, with no clouds in the sky and temperatures hitting 95 degrees at kickoff. Despite the heat, Troy came out with energy, showcasing their speed and precision, which made it difficult for A-State’s offense to advance. The match quickly turned into a battle between two strong defenses.
The Red Wolves outshot Troy 18–11, with several close opportunities. Midfielder Rileigh van Beek fired a hard shot after recovering a pass from FWD Alexia Watts, while Watts later drilled one toward the top corner, missing by just inches.
In the second half, van Beek delivered a dangerous corner kick that nearly found the net, but a diving Trojan defender denied the chance.
The real highlight of the match, however, was the defensive effort on both sides. A-State’s back line made several critical stops, including an impressive header clearance by defender Ellen Hampton to keep Troy from scoring.
The Red Wolves will return to action on Thursday to take on the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns in Lafayette. The game will begin at 7 p.m.
