A depiction of high school graduation.
I graduated from Center Hill High School, a school in Mississippi in 2023. I loved my high school years and will always hold those memories close to my heart, but I never went back to it.
I wasn’t necessarily popular, but I was definitely known. I was involved in clubs, the school news, and was on the yearbook staff. My mom worked at the high school too, so if you were involved in any school event or activity, chances are you knew my name and face.
Personally, I always found “super seniors” awkward. The people who have graduated but still come back to high school events. It always looked like they were holding onto the past. Once you walk out of your high school for the last time after graduation, you can look back on those memories without going back.
It’s not that I don’t appreciate the school or the people; it’s that I understand that chapter is over. I lived it, I loved it, and now it’s time to let it stay in the past.
The highlight of high school wasn’t the pep rallies, games, or themed days. Hanging out with the people you care about was always more exciting than the event itself, and honestly, there’s not a single school event I’d rank higher than just spending time with my friends outside of it all.
Let’s be real—high school has a mix of people you like and people you don’t. That’s just how it is. So why would I go to an event that involves people that could ruin my experience when I could just hangout with the people that I know would enhance it.
Highschool was a special time for me and I’ll always be grateful for how it shaped my life, but part of growing up is knowing when to move forward and let the past stay in the past. I realized that some moments are simply just meant to be remembered, not relived or revisited.
I don’t think being a “super senior” means someone doesn’t have friends in college, nor does it mean that you can’t hold on to the friends you made in high school. I do think, however, that it’s more beneficial and enjoyable to catch up with people outside of school events rather than trying to hang on to a place you’ve already outgrown.
