Bring homecoming back to the pack

A-State students enjoy homecoming event at homecoming 2021.

The annual homecoming parade stopped being annual last year for “Inter-HOWL-actic,” but after looking through old Arkansas State University homecoming photos, I think it needs to return. Homecoming needs to return.

Originally, I assumed the parade was assembled only for the COVID year homecoming, as guidelines were still in place. However, after further digging, I discovered it actually began in 1931 and became an annual tradition until 2023.

Homecoming parades are a great way to get the entire A-State community–Jonesboro residents, students, faculty and staff, and especially alumni–involved. The streets on campus are perfectly suited for a parade. Residence halls line the streets, providing views from every angle.

Without the parade, it feels like A-State is not the “One Pack” that administrators want us to be. Without it and other classic events, homecoming lacks a real connection to the community.

Over the years, homecoming has become less and less of a community event. Students used to compete for the most decorated house, and faculty would vie for the best-decorated office.

But now, those competitions are used for Paint the Town Red to celebrate the first home football game, and the only competitions held for homecoming are for best banner, the annual “Yell Like Hell” lip sync battle and, of course, homecoming court.

While there was a community event downtown, there was also one during Paint the Town Red and it felt more like a homecoming event than our actual homecoming.

Homecoming in college should be at least as fun as it was in high school. Parades, friendly competitions, hell, even a pep rally would work.

Give the students another Order of the Pack for homecoming. Get the students and alumni hyped for their team.

It feels like homecoming is being pushed aside. Yes, the Student Activities Board hosted events throughout the week but, compared to years past, they weren’t as fun. Even last year’s events were more engaging for students with a whole laser tag event one night.

Bring back the parade, the competitions, the community aspect.

Bring back the spark to homecoming at A-State.

Because, right now, it just feels like an ordinary week for the Red Wolves.
